Bookcase - Bookcase

Very simply, a bookcase is a piece of furniture that contains horizontal shelves which is used to store books of any size and shape. Some bookcases come with doors to protect the books from falling out, very different from the normal bookshelves that we see at the library. The doors created to make the shelves are glazed (transparent) so that one can see the title of the book written on its spine while not having to open the bookcase itself.
It’s no surprise that the most common places that you will find bookcases are at the public library and especially at a law firm, with all those years of knowledge which still haven’t been transferred online.
However, it was only with the invention of printing that books began to be widely circulated thus requiring people to use bookcases rather than just using cupboards to store their books in. The oldest bookcase can be found in England at the Bodleian Library at the Oxford University made specifically for the library in the latter part of the sixteenth century.
Owning a bookcase can be a boon for avid readers in their homes and with recent developments, not only do they meet the purpose of keeping books that are close to you safe but also add to the décor at home. |
